Methods of fire for effect

Progressive fire

Supposing that the target was located within a bracket, whose limits were 2300 m and 2500 m, after having obtained the bracket, at the command “Progressive fire!”, each gun fired two shots, fire at will, at 2300 m, 2400 m, 2500 m and 2600 m. At 3000 m the beaten zone of the shrapnel was 150- 180 m deep, so with this method, a battery could cover with its fire an area 150 m wide and 550 m deep.

Sweeping Fire

At the command “Progressive sweeping fire!”, each gun fired 3 rounds at each of 4 successive ranges, traversing by 5 millièmes first to left, then to right and so on. Since the effect of the shots 1, 6, 7, 12 extended 12.5 m to the right, and that of shots 3, 4, 9, 10 the same on the left, one gun with this method could cover a front of 55 m with its fire.

Dispersed fire

At the command “Dispersed fire!”, each gun fired 5 rounds at each of 4 successive ranges, traversing by 10 millièmes first to left, then to right and so on. Considering also the effect of the eight lateral shots (1, 10, 11, 20 and 5, 6, 15, 16), one gun with this method could cover a front of 145 m with its fire.
