Remarks Western and Bulgarian
sources listed carefully all the forts of Odrin, even when they had little or
no combat value, the Turkish official history grouped the fortification of
the fortress into 18 strongpoints, large groups of combat elements, including
infantry positions, artillery emplacements and shelters, dispersed and
conforming on the nature of the ground, like in the German Feste. Therefore there was often no
direct correspondence between the different lists. In addition the available
maps were sometimes incorrect, for instance the German map placed the fort of
Kaik south of Kavkas Tabia on the same line of the other forts of the Eastern
sector, even if it was behind Top Yolu, in second line. Also the order of the
forts of the Eastern sector was a bit confused, since the Turkish map had Kestanelik directly after Yıldız and two forts
between Kestanelik and Ayvaz Baba, while the western maps inserted a fort
between Ildis Tabia and Kestenlik and another between Kestanelik and Aivas
Baba. In North-western Sector they
identify Karagös Tabia with aitan Tarla that the Turks regarded as
two different strongpoints. |
